There Is No Music

from Better By Far by Elaine Romanelli

/

lyrics

There is no music in a croaking crow.
It brags in strutting consonants,
A small Hell’s Angel, revving up.

But even so, there’s music when it flies for fun.
And all its tricks mirror your liquid voice
In climbing turns, glissandos,
Trills that stall, then flare into soft cadences.

So sometimes when your words swirl out
Like beads strung on air,
I lose the meaning for the sound
And see a line of dancing crows across the sky

Black dots that acquiesce and disagree,
In noteless, staffless counterpoint.

If my conceit’s absurd,
forgive my high-flown choice of words.

I meant to say:
I like your voice.
